Nitrogen and phosphorus removal enhanced by humus soil activated sludge process

Humus soil activated sludge (HSAS) process and conventional activated sludge (CAS) process of 400 L/day capacity were set up in lab to evaluate their performance. This study mainly focused on testing Nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiency and settleability and dewaterability of sludge. The research shows that HSAS process could enhance the removal of nutrient salt, especially TP. It enhanced NH4 +-N turn into NO3-N and improved NH4 +-N and TN removal better. The removal efficiency of NH4 +-N, TN, TP are 82%, 49% and 67%, respectively, higher than traditional activated sludge process (8%, 7% and 39%, respectively). It didnt have a better effect on the COD removal compared it with CAS process. They had about 86% removal efficiency on average. Settleability and dewaterability of the sludge from HSAS process was enhanced 14%, 29% respectively. Observation of floc shape by microscope indicated that HSAS was larger than CAS.
