Optimising the operating performance of vertical flow constructed wetland treating rural wastewater
Three different operation modes were used in vertical flow constructed wetland system treating rural wastewater. The results showed that, low water level operation can provide more oxygen for organic matter and NH4 +-N removal, but lack of the anoxic condition for denitrification. Remarkable removals of organic matter, NH4 +-N and TN were achieved under the cyclic batch operation. Due to the lack of aerobic condition inside the wetland, the pollutants removal can not achieve the discharge standard under high water level operation. For nitrogen removal, cyclic batch operation was considered to be an optimum operation mode of vertical flow constructed wetland systems.
