Treatment of Highway Runoff with Soil Infiltration System
Highway runoff is one of the important water resources in urban areas, though severe pollution has curbed its direct use. In this study, a soil infiltration system is proposed for treatment of highway runoff. Bench-scale experiments with different inflow concentrations and system operation modes (continuous/intermittent) have been designed to simulate the highly varied inflow rate and pollution load conditions of highway runoff. The experiment results indicate that the system has a high treatment efficiency of 84%-94% for SS, 50% for TOC, 40%-80% for TN and 75%-95% for TP. Based on the experiment results, a full-scale installation was designed and constructed. Nearly one years operation of the installation showed that the system performs well with high treatment efficiency and the effluent can be used for irrigation and road water spraying.
