Chairing an Academic Department: Disciplinarity and Diversity in Faculty Evaluation

In modern universities, types of faculty productivity are supposed to vary in accord with disciplines, but corporate approach to the faculty evaluation is still widely adopted in China. This paper discusses the definition of disciplines and the disciplinary classification systems of western scholars. Then the epistemological and social differences between disciplines are presented as the basis faculty evaluation, such as preference of research vs. teaching, short-term vs. long-term evaluation and team work vs. individual task. At last, universitylevel administrators as well as department chairs are encouraged to employ subject area standards instead of single or unitary mechanism of faculty evaluation.
