Analytical Method of Gasket Stress on Bolted Flanged Connections in Consideration of Ezternal Bending Moments and Elements Creep

Bolted flanged connections are commonly used in industrial equipment and piping system. In this paper, the deformation compatibility equation of bolted flanged connections was established, in which the external bending moments acting on the connections and the creep of bolts, flanges and gasket were taken into consideration. An analytical method for calculating the gasket residual stress was proposed. A typical gasket joint was analyzed, and gasket residual stress distribution along the axial and circumferential direction was obtained. The stress calculated by the presented analytical method was compared with that obtained by the existing methods, and the former is relatively smaller than the latter. The gasket residual stress distributes unevenly both along the axial and circumferential direction, it increases from gasket tensile side to compress side, and the stress in gasket compress side is much larger than that in tensile side because of the effect of external bending moments.
