A Novel Fiber Sensor Based on a Bragg Fiber with a Defect Layer

A novel fiber sensor based on a Bragg fibber with a defect layer is proposed. A defect layer is introduced in the multilayer cladding resulting to the resonant operation of some wavelengths. The refractive index and thickness of the defect layer determines both the number and the location of the resonant wavelengths inside the band-gap of the Bragg fiber. Relationship between the resonant wavelengths and the refractive index/thickness of the defect layer is inves-tigated. The resonant wavelengths of the Bragg fiber with a fixed defect layer is also dependent on the refractive index of the fiber core of the Bragg fiber, which indicates sensing application for the refractive index of the medium filled in the hollow fiber core.
