Birefringence Vector Computation and Measurement for Fiber with Polarization Dependent Loss
Based on polar decomposition of the Mueller matrix, the birefringence vector is computed for the fiber with polarization dependent loss (PDL) with the validity confirmed by experiment. A computer-controlled measure system is employed to measure the Mueller matrix of a 2.5-km fiber for 5-mm length under lateral press. By comparison we find the differential rotation method is applicable to large rotations with accurate results. Further experiments in pressure vector measurement show the linearity of birefringence magnitude to pressure is excellent (R2 > 0.999) with average error~0.25 N, and the press orientation can be determined by birefringence vector with average error~1.05°. Our conclusions are applicable to long time measurement of the fiber in complicated environment with great perturbation such as the fiber-based remote pressure sensing.
