Application Summary of IEC61850 in Power System Protection
IEC61850 is a global standard for communication inside a substation, which integrates many latest technologies and derivates many novel applications in substation, especially in power system protection realm. This paper will focus on novel applications in protection field in principle and some benefit from both performance and cost points of view. Firstly, the paper outlines some key features which will impact or benefit protection application. Secondly, the paper studies and summarizes how to utilize GOOSE to improve protection performance and expand novel applications in protections field. At last, the paper summarizes protection benefit and features of IEC61850 and non-conventional instrument transformers (NCIT).
