A Comparison of The Electricity Supply Industry in China and South Africa
This paper focuses on the comparison of the electricity supply industry (ESI) between China and South Africa. The level of electrification, major electricity suppliers, generation source, and market types are compared. We found that the electricity development is much quicker in China compared to South Africa. This is not only a matter of size, in which the total capacity in China is more than twelve times of one in South Africa. It also depends on whether the government or the industry is able to keep the balance between electricity supply and demand. The causes of power shortage happened in China and South Africa are similar, such as government policy on building new capacity, change of demand pattern, higher economic growth, and the increase of generation cost. However, the fact of approximately 20% annual increase in installed capacity in China since 2005 is unlikely to happen in South Africa with lack of capital and skills. As a result, the introduction of competition to electricity industry is much easier to be implemented in China compared to South Africa.
