Advanced Metering Infrastructure
Utilities are facing serious problems with aging asset, lack of skilled workforce and lagging in advanced IT applications. All these have been encouraging utilities to look for advanced applications. Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) has been the hottest one due to the tremendous advancement in telecommunication technologies in the two last decades and the huge benefits it will generate. Driven by regulation requirements, many utilities are implementing and planning AMI deployment at this time in order to realize business transformation. This paper provides an overview of AMI technologies, current implementation situations, and its major components as smart meters, wide area communication network, Meter Data Management System (MDMS), and Home Area Networks (HAN). AMI benefits and its relation to smart grid are also summarized.
