Simplified Implementation of Software-Defined Radio Based SOQPSK Demodulators

This paper introduces new schemes of softwaredefined radio (SDR) based shaped offset quadrature phase-shift keying (SOQPSK) demodulators. Current synchronizations for linear modulations are not always applicable since the data symbols in SOQPSK are correlated. By close loop delay-andmultiply carrier frequency recovery, maximum likelihood estimate (MLE) based carrier phase and timing recovery and simplified detection of SOQPSK with 2-state trellis, the schemes of the all digital SOQPSK-MIL and SOQPSK-TG demodulators are suggested. From numeric simulations, our schemes can obtain good performance within just 0.8 dB of ideal performance at an additive Gaussian white noise (AWGN) channel. Moreover, the implementations of the simplified 2-state trellis based SOQPSK detectors have very low complexity. Therefore, it can be used to implement SOQPSK demodulator applied in military or aeronautical telemetry field.
