Accelerating the Design and Verification Process for 3GPP LTE
This paper discusses early R&D hardware testing by combining the power and flexibility of simulation with test equipment for the design of 3GPP LTE systems and circuits. 3GPP LTE is a complex wireless standard, which at the time of this writing is still evolving. This presents a number of unique design and verification challenges such as: 1) evaluating existing designs, algorithms, and hardware (e.g. WCDMA, HSPA, WiMAX.) to determine if they can be used for a new LTE system design, 2) defining design requirements for new hardware designs, 3) writing and verifying algorithm functionality to an evolving wireless specification, 4) verifying the performance of RF designs and hardware independently of the baseband hardware/firmware (e.g. coded BER for an RF receiver design), 5) convergence challenges: verifying a new LTE design to multiple signal formats (WiMAX., WLAN, WCDMA, HPSA), and 6) R&D hardware testing challenges in verifying the performance of RF and RF/mixed-signal hardware independently of baseband hardware/firmware. These are some of the challenges which will be addressed in this paper.
