Studies on the Structure and Function of Phytochromes as Photoreceptors Based on Synthetic Organic Chemistry
1.Introduction Phytochromes are red/far-red light responsive photoreceptors first discovered in plants. They have covalently attached linear tetrapyrrole (bilin) chromophore and respond to red and far-red light through a reversible interchange between red light absorbing Pr-form and far-red light absorbing Pfr-form (Figure 1). Three different bilins are used as chromophores: land plant uses phytochromobilin (PФB), some algal species and cyanobacteria use phycocyanobilin (PCB), whereas other bacteria use biliverdin (BV).
