Synthesis of Fine Chemicals Using Different Catalytic Systems and Different Media
1.Introduction The interest for gold in heterogeneous catalysis started with the demonstration it can catalyze the low temperature oxidation of CO,ethyne hydrochlorination and propylene epoxidation 1,2. Then it expanded and numerous contributions demonstrating the effectiveness of supported gold in many other important reactions emerged 3. Gold nanoparticles in catalysis may act as active redox catalysts for oxygencontaining hydrocarbons and as reduction catalysts for alkenes, alkynes, imines, carbonyls, and nitro compounds 3. The performance of these catalysts was attributed to stabilized Au(Ⅲ), which was considered the active site for performing not only the oxidation of CO but also the C-C bond formation. Whilst gold has been shown to be highly active, a major issue is found in terms of its stability due to the ease by which it may change its oxidation state and, in the case of nanoparticles, the catalyst particle size. Therefore, modalities to enhance the stability are extremely important for practical application which can be in the form of the solvent used or the nature of the support. For example, stabilization of gold in the form of nanoparticles in ionic liquids by imidazolium derivatives has been reported 4.
