Gemini Surfactant-Sensitized Chrome Azurol S Method for Trace Determination of Aluminum in Aqueous Solution
1.Introduction The vermicelli is often used as breakfast in south of china, and KAI(SO4).12H2O is used during the vermicelli preparation to make it more tenacious. However the high amount of aluminum in food will be harmful to health. So a simple, fast and exact method for the aluminum detection should be established. The spectrophotometric method is widely employed for the detection of metal ions owing to the higher sensitivity, cheaper instrument and simpler manipulation. Many researches have showed that the sensitivity of spectrophotometric determinations of various metal ions by absorption of their complexes with metallochromic dyes can sometimes be markedly improved by the addition of surfactants 1,2, and the widely used surfactants for this purpose are commercial mono surfactants such as CTAB, CPB and so on. Gemini surfactants are made up of two hydrophobic tails and two hydrophilic headgroups connected though a linkage adjacent to the hydrophilic headgroups in a molecule. They have much higher surface activity than the corresponding monomers, and many unique properties 3. However there are little reports about sensitivity enhancement by gemini surfactants. So in present work EQ 16-0-16, a new gemini surfactant prepared in our laboratory, was used to sensitize the color reaction in chrome azurol S method for trace determination of aluminum in aqueous solution.
