Iodine as a Catalyst for Conversion of Carbonyl Compounds into Precursors of Antimalarial Perozides
1.Introduction In recent years an increasing resistance of malaria parasites to commonly used alkaloidal drugs and the discovery of the antimalarial properties of artemisinin1, has boosted interest in organic peroxides as potential antimalarials2. Dihydroperoxides and perketals are key intermediates in the synthesis of many classes of peroxides, such as tetraoxanes and other tetraoxacycloalkanes, macrocylic endoperoxides and acyclic analogues with a variety of functional groups3. Organic peroxides are also valuable chemicals that serve as radical initiators and oxidants4,5.
