Synthesis and Characterization of Albumin-Chitosan Bioconjugate
1.Introduction Polysaccharide-protein combinations have generated increasing interest for biomedical applications in recent years 1. Chitosan, a naturally derived polysaccharide, is reported to be biocompatible, biodegradable and low toxicity. Availability of numerous amino and hydroxyl groups allows chitosan to be conjugated with antiviral, antimicrobial, antitumor, and anticoagulant agents, as well as peptides and collagen. Moreover, chitosan has been extensively studied for biomedical applications such as drug delivery and tissue repairing 2. For example, chitosan has been catalyzed coupling with peroxidase, cytochrome c, pepstatin A and green fluorescent protein (GFP) by tyrosinase, and the biological activities of the proteins were retained 3, 4 Chitosan has also directly linked with pepstatin A using EDAC as coupling reagent 5.
