Application of Natural Oils for Synthesis and Modification of Epozy Resins
1.Introduction The application of vegetable oils for modification and synthesis of different polymers has been intensively developed over the world for years 1-3. This direction of research is stimulated by the ecological considerations resulting from domestic and international laws, and, by economical aspects, in particular by increasing price of petrochemical raw materials and the perspective of depleting stocks of petroleum within the next tens of years. There are many different methods of the modification of vegetable oils, which enable using them in the synthesis and processing of polymers. Epoxidized oils are used mainly as plasticizers and stabilizers for thermoplastics. Synthesis of polyurethane prepolymers, foams and elastomers is the main application of epoxidized oils with opened epoxy rings. Modified natural oils are used also for the synthesis of polyamides, polyesteramides, vinyl polymers, polynaphthols and organic-inorganic hybrid materials. They have found the application also in the technology of epoxy resins, mainly as internal plasticizers for Bisphenol A-based epoxy resins and components of epoxy coating systems. Different possibilities of modification of selected vegetable oils and using them in the epoxy systems were studied and are presented in this work.
