Smart Drug Delivery of Organic/Inorganic Hybrid Calcium-Alginate Beads
1.Introduction Smart polymers are a kind of polymers that show a remarkable change in their properties as a response to slight changes in the surrounding environment such as pH, temperature and ionic strength.Much research has been done to associate biopolymers (such as alginate and chitosan) with thermo-sensitive maeromolecules in an attempt to prepare matrixes that present a dual sensitivity to both pH and temperature. In this work,UV-induced graft polymerization of NIPAAm was performed on the surface of pH-responsive biomineralized polysaccharide-coated Ca-alginate beads to produce a new kind of pH/temperature sensitive drug delivery system. As illustrated in Scheme 1,PNIPAAm on the surface acts as on-off gate to control the smart release of the entrapped drug. The purpose of biomineralized polysaccharide-coating in this study is to improve the strength and sustain the drug release rate of Ca-alginate beads in a neutral pH condition.
