Soap-free Emulsion Polymerization of Methyl Methacrylate and Hydrozyethyi methacrylate in the Presence of Nano-SiO2

1.Introduction Polymer/inorganic composites combine the excellent properties of both organic and inorganic components, such as the excellent flexibility and toughness of the polymer matrix, and the peculiar properties of optics, electrical, thermal, chemical activity and catalysis of the inorganic component. They will likely become one of the fastest developing materials in the new century. Emulsion polymerization with inorganic nanoparticles is a useful method to synthesize polymer/inorganic nanocomposites and functional coatings. There are many works about preparation of nanocomposites by emulsion polymerization in the presence of inorganic nanoparticles1-3. Owing to their nontoxicity, stability, high thermal resistance, specific optics and electrics property, nano-SiO2 is a typic material in preparation polymer/inorganic nanoeomposites. The majority of works studied about the preparation of nanocomposites and the effect of the nanopartieles on emulsion polymerization with emulsifier, only a few papers reported about the soap-free emulsion polymerization, especially few on the kinetic of these soap-free emulsion polymerization systems4-5. In this paper, the soap-free emulsion polymerization of methyl methaerylate (MMA) and hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) in the presence of nano-SiO2 was investigated. Kinetics of the soap-free emulsion polymerization of P (MMA-HEMA) with different nano-SiO2 level was discussed.
