Synthesis and Luminescence of AlN:Eu2+ Phosphors for Field Emission Displays
1.Introduction Field emission displays (FEDs) are attracting significant attention as one of the most promising flat panel displays, because they promise thin panel thickness, self-emission, distortion-free image, wide viewing angle, quick response, as well as low power consumption1,2. A serious obstacle to the development of full color FEDs is the lack of suitable blue luminescent materials with high luminance, high efficiency, good chromaticity, low saturation, and good aging properties at low electron acceleration voltages (≤ 10 kV) and high current densities (10 -100 A/cmZ). Sulfide phosphors such as ZnS: Cu, AI and SrGa2S4: Ce3+ have been developed as blue phosphors for FEDs3-6. However, sulfide-based phosphors degrade significantly under high-energy electron bombardment, generating corrosive sulfur-bearing gases that contaminate emission tips and shorten the device lifetime. It thus requires scientists to continuously explore suitable blue phosphors with high efficiencies and good chromaticity.
