Synthesis and Characterization of Superhydrophobic SiO2 and SiO2/TiO2 Composite Aerogel at an Ambient Pressure
1.Introduction It has been accepted that titania with a large surface area and small particle size is desirable for photocatalytic reaction. So far many efforts have been concentrated on the synthesis of photocatalysts in a high-surface-area form like aerogels or through the combination of silica and titania1. Superhydrophobic silica and silica/titania aerogels are better suitable for organic pollutants adsorption from water and catalytic supports in reactions including partial oxidation, isomerization, nitroxidation, erterification, epoxidation, CO oxidation and so on2-3. However, an inherent problem for the preparation of mixed oxides by sol-gel processing of a mixture of different metal aloxides is that phase separation may occur because of different hydrolysis and condensation rates. In this paper, the homogeneous superhydrophobic SiO2 and SiO2/TiO2 composite aerogels were synthesized at an ambient pressure.
