Sustainability and Biomimetics in Functional Material
1.Objective and some background Constitutive materials have played an increasingly important role in many modem devices, structures and technologies. In some cases, material is the only feasible and/or best choice of variables in helping the devices or structures to perform the require functions such as recognition, discrimination, and actuating (may include self-repair and self-degradation) in a controlled fashion in response to any change of the surrounding environment.Development of the novel functional materials has thus become increasingly demanding and complex In conserving nature resources with minimal or no compromising of the needs of our future generations, sustainability becomes an important consideration in material development.Attempt at minimizing adverse effects on the environment and achieving the desired performance with a competitive price should be emphasized. With many many years of unmatched experience, nature is worlds foremost developer of functional materials.Learning or getting inspiration from nature, can offer cleaner, greener sustainability solutions and added functionality.Hence biomimetics can provide attractive novel and more effective routes to functional material development. We have thus considered both snstainability and biomimetics in the development of functional materials, particularly the multifunctional materials for added value and quality.
