Studies on Pollen Morphology of Chinquapin (Castanea henryi Rehd. & Wils.)

Pollen grains of 14 chinquapin cultivars were gathered from main production area-Jianou city as the materials. After digestion with acetic anhydride and other pre-treatments, observation of pollen morphology was conducted with scanning electron microscope. The results indicated that these pollen grains were small and oblong, 3-lobed circular in polar view and oblong, broadly elliptic, rhombie in equatorial view. Pollen of different cultivars differed in size, shape, and especially in the exine ornamentation. Some pollen grains were featured with striate folds, some with stripe grooves and some with holes and lobes. This indicated that chinquapin pollen was genetically diversified, which provides a basis for classification, differentiation and determination of kinship.
