Treatment of simulated distillery wastewater with thermophilic membrane bioreactor
A thermophilic membrane bioreactor (MBR) with a flat stainless steel membrane module was applied to treat simulated diluted distillery wastewater under temperature 45-80 ℃. Shift of temperature had significant influence on contaminants removal capability and characteristics of activated sludge of MBR. COD removal efficiency dropped down to an undesirable degree at 80℃. The increase of SCOD in mixed liquor caused the deterioration of permeate. Despite of the turbidity of sludge mixed liquor, the permeate remained clear. It indicated the reliable filterability of metallic membrane at high temperature. Sludge floc size and the ratio of protein EPS to carbohydrates EPS decreased with increasing temperature. The application of the heat-durable membrane in thermophilic MBR revealed the advantages of the metallic membrane.
