Ps2 production, utility and prospects for spectroscopic measurements

Recently we have obtained experimental evidence for the production of molecular positronium (Ps2) in a porous silica film 1 and on an Al (111) surface 2 following the implantation of intense positron pulses 3. In this work the presence of Ps2 was inferred from changes in single-shot lifetime spectra 4 measured using different incident beam densities. When combined with variations in the sample temperature this methodology provides convincing evidence for Ps2 formation, and can even be used to study the formation mechanisms 5 and measure the binding energy 6 of the molecule. Nevertheless, information obtained from lifetime data is indirect, and it is desirable to perform a more direct, spectroscopic, measurement, which may be done via a resonant excitation of the bound 1S-2P molecular state 7.
