Crystallinity and Free Volume of Syndiotactic Polystyrene Conditioned in Supercritical Fluids
Syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) possesses complex polymorphism in its semicrystalline state which has been extensively studied by X-ray diffraction (WAXD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Different crystal structures (α, β, γ and δ can be obtained under different thermal crystallization conditions and environments. Supercritical fluids have the capacity to swell and plasticize glassy polymers and change concequently their molecular mobility and glass transition temperature. In the case of sPS this treatment will lead to specific crystallization conditions different from crystallization under ambient conditions.
