Free Volume in Membrane Materials

Gas separation by membranes is important for many technical applications. The amount and distribution of free volume in polymeric membranes significantly determines the transport and separation properties. Recend improvements are centered around addition of nanoparticles, as the general limit of permeability and selectivity for pure polymers is reached. Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) is a general accepted technique for determination of free volume in polymers. In the present work on the one hand a clear correlation between changes of permeability and free volume in Polyphenylenoxide with different concentration of hyperbranched polyesters (Dendrimers) will be shown 1.
