Effect of Ozygen on the Free Volume Property of Poly (ether-urethane) Irradiated by Neutron

Polyurethane is widely used in medical, automotive and industrial fields, and it has been paid more attention and studied extensively. 1 Neutron irradiation damage is a useful tool to change the microstrucuture without introducing other chemical groups in polymer. 2 The free volume property and intermolecular interaction (especially hydrogen bonding) of poly (ether-urethane) (PEU) irradiated by neutron under different atmosphere has been studied by positron annihilation lifetime spectra (PALS) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). The results suggested that the hydrogen-bonding interactions and free volume property in PEU depended strongly on the neutron irradiation dose. With increasing the irradiation dose, the hydrogen bonds increased, and fractional free volume decreased. It is found that the stronger the hydrogen-bonding interaction, the higher the average chain packing efficiency and the smaller the fractional free volume, the better the miscibility. On the other hand, the presence of oxygen in the irradiation process enhanced the hydrogen bonding interaction, which resulted in more free volume collapsed. With neutron flux increase, two subpeaks in free volume distribution merged together, and the presence of oxygen accelerated the transformation.
