Positron annihilation studies of age hardened AA7zzz aluminum alloy
Age hardened aluminum alloys continue to attract significant attention owing to their light weight and controllable mechanical properties 1. AA7xxx aluminum alloy series with Zn, Mg and Cu as major alloying elements provide superior mechanical strength and excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking 2. Alloying elements and aging treatments ultimately decide the performance of these alloys. From supersaturated solid solution, MgZn2 precipitate out via an intermediate stage of GP zone formation 3. Positron annihilation spectroscopy is extensively used to study these precipitate formation stages 4,5.
