Positron Traps for Beam Production

Positron traps have proven to be useful tools for a variety of applications 1 including antihydrogen production 2,3, atomic physics studies 4, and dense positronium experiments 5. Unique capabilities include: (1) the ability to produce ultracold positron beams which have permitted positron-molecule interactions to be studied in previously inaccessible low-energy regimes 4; (2) the ability to produce intense positron pulses which recently led to the creation of the first positronium molecules 5; and (3) the ability to produce brightness-enhanced beams using novel positron-plasma manipulation techniques 6. First Point Scientific in collaboration with Wuhan University is currently enhancing the capability of positron traps by extending their area of applicability to include material science applications. Recent developments in this area will be described as well as potential capabilities for various applications. Specific topics will include the use of rotating wall compression for producing brightness-enhanced beams as well as bunching techniques for producing subnanosecond beams for positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy.
