3-D image of defect structures measured using a positron microprobe

We have developed a high efficiency slow positron beam based on the positron trapping technique1. A solid neon moderator was used in our system, which has much higher efficiency compared with the conventional tungsten moderator. The moderated slow positron beam is thermalized by collision with nitrogen gas molecules. The energy spread of positron beam is reduced from 1-2 eV to about 0.025 eV. The trapping efficiency of positron is as high as 20%. A rotating electric field was applied inside the trap to compress the beam size to about 1 mm.
