The effect of anneal on the interfaces of PP and PA blends studied by positron

Polypropylene-polyamide (PP/PA) blends have received a great attention during the last decade 1. In fact, the existence of PA is responsible for the impact resistance, heat resistance, and the presence of PP improved the inertness to humidity and ease of processing of the blends. It is important to study the dispersion of the components in PP/PA blends.2 In this paper, the effect of anneal on the PP/modified PP(mPP)/PA/MMT system has been studied by positron annihilation lifetime spectra (PALS). The PP/mPP/PA/MMT blends with different PA weight fraction were prepared in a twin screw extruder. The o-Ps lifetime and intensity of unannealed blends were linearly additive basis on the PA weight fraction, which is coincident to the simple compound rule. The results meant PP and PA are not miscible though the modified PP had been filled in the blends. However, the o-Ps intensity of the samples decreased after samples annealed. It could be interpreted that anneal induced the relaxation of chain segments, the chain segments were easier to fill the free volume holes, thus the free volume concentration decreased.
