Open volume study on defects of GeSz glasses by positron annihilation spectroscopy

Defects in topologically disordered chalcogenide glasses have greatly predominated on its electrical and optical properties1,2, e.g. Photoinduced phenomenon, luminescence of rare earth-doped chalcogenide glasses. An adequate understanding of the open-volume defects in these glasses is profound to explore the correlation between its structure and electric-optical properties. Despite a variety of techniques, such as Neutron (or X-ray) diffraction3, Raman scattering4 and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) 5, have allowed elucidating the residual medium-range structural order of non-crystalline material, there is still a lack of techniques that is especially sensitive to nano-volume open structure of materials except positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) 6.
