Pore-size distributions in natural minerals

Positron lifetime spectroscopy was conducted for a number of natural minerals to investigate open-nano pores. Similarly to the cases of polymers and glasses, positronium (Ps) formation occurs with ortho-positronium (o-Ps) intensity of a few% to 20%. Size distributions of nano pores were evaluated based on o-Ps lifetimes. Size distributions were found to be strongly depend on their environmental history of formation. For example, sedimentary rock such as chert contain less nano pores than volcanic glasses formed by quenching. The results will be discussed with respect to formation processes of nano pores influenced by earths environment.
