Positronium in alkanes at high pressure of argon and nitrogen
Positron lifetime spectra in some n-alkanes CnH2n+2 were measured as a function of temperature and pressure. Majority of measurements was done for n-nonadecane. Three kinds of measurements were performed: without gas penetration to the sample, with pressure produced by penetrating gas: argon or nitrogen. Solid alkanes (odd numbered with n>9, and even-numbered with n>20) exist in two phases: low-temperature rigid crystal, and waxy rotator phase preceding melting. PALS method was used to observe the phase transition points.
