Limits of Beam Eztraction from Single-Component Plasmas

Beams of antiparticles are useful for applications ranging from positron-atomic physics to materials analysis 1. Tailored positron beams from single-component plasmas confined in Penning-Malmberg traps have proven useful in a wide range of applications 2, 3. We describe here studies of the factors that limit the transverse spatial extent of such beams in the case where centerline extraction is used to minimize the transverse beam width 4, 5. This technique exploits the fact that the plasma potential is largest near the plasma center; thus when the confining potential at one end is carefully lowered, a beam is formed that is comprised of only particles from the region near r=0.
