The Role of Non-resonant Effect in Terahertz Transmission through Subwavelength Holes

We study the role of non-resonant effect in enhanced transmission of terahertz pulses through periodic array of subwavelength holes. The measured terahertz transmission spectra exhibit a characteristic evolution with various hole widths. The peak transmission ap-proaches a maximum value at a critical hole width, while monotonic linewidth broadening and blueshift are observed when the hole width increases. The physical mechanism responsible for such transmission properties is closely associated with the coupling between discrete resonant excitation of surface plasmons and continuum non-resonant transmission through the holes.
