Design of a Compact 5-bit Time Delay Module with Left-handed Transmission Lines
A 5-bit time delay module with left-handed and right-handed transmission lines is designed and fabricated, which can realize a 100ps time delay as the minimum and a 3100ps as the maximum in 9-10GHz frequency range. Compared to traditional transmission line time delay module, the present 5-bit left-handed transmission line time delay module has been of compactness and low losses. Because of the sharp relationship between Ang(S21) of LH TLs versus frequency, LH-TLs have shown their superiority to RH-TLs in the application of large true time delay 1. Here, RH-TLs and LH-TLs have been used to construct a 5-bit time delay module, where RH-TLs have been chosen to realize 100ps and 200ps time delays in meander configuration and LH-TLs have been used to realize 400ps and 800ps and 1600ps time delays. Finally, time delay lines of 100ps, 200ps, 400ps, 800ps and 1600ps and 10 SPDT switches have been fabricated on a chip to form a 5-bit time delay module. By controlling these switches, time delay from 100ps up to 3100ps can be achieved. The whole dimension of the final 5-bit time delay module is about 10×20×2 mm3. Comparisons of experimental and theoretic results of different time delay lines have been given to demonstrate the present design.
