Design of Left-handed Time Delay Lines

Delay lines based on left-handed transmission line (LH-TL) structure are designed and fabricated. Comparisons of the simulation and experimental results demonstrate validity of the present design. It can be found that the LH-TL time delay lines possess higher delay efficiency and more compactness than traditional right-handed transmission line (RH-TL) ones. Suffering from high loss and large volume, traditional delay lines such as optical delay lines, magnetostatic wave delays lines, surface acoustic wave delay lines are difficult to be applied in MIC and MMIC. Recently, LH-TLs have found their wide applications in passive microwave components 1 because of their designable propagation constant β. A novel structure of delay line utilizing left-handed transmission line (LH-TL) structure is proposed here. Numerical and measurement results demonstrate the efficiency of present LH time delay line.
