New Microstrip Filters With Composite Right/Left-handed Transmission Line

The transfer functions of two new kinds of composite right/left-handed transmission line have been presented. Because of the existence of multiple transmission zeros of the transmission line structures, sharp attenuations can be obtained by transmission zeros in both the lower and upper stopbands of the filters. The present composite right/left-handed transmission lines show the inherent potential for the design of bandpass filter. Theoretical analyses reveal that the transfer functions of CRLH TLs 1 with π and T network have multi-roots, so CRLH TL are suitable in application of bandpass filters. Further researches show that the roots of CRLH TLs with π network distribute in a wide range while those of CRLH TLs with T network distribute in a narrow range. Consequently, CRLH TLs with π are superior to the design of broad bandpass filter, and CRLH TLs with T network are superior to the design of narrow bandpass filter. Two novel microstrip bandpass filters are given as examples as shown in Fig. 1 and Fig. 2, respectively. By adjusting the series inductance/capacitance or the shunt capacitances/inductors, the 3 dB bandwidth is flexible.
