Improved Structures of Left-handed Transmission Line

Based on the equivalent circuit of left-handed transmission lines, improved structures of left-handed transmission lines are proposed here. Compared to existed left-handed transmission lines structuresthe parasitical shunt capacitance and series inductance of present transmission lines decrease, as a result, the present improved structures are of broader bandwidth in which the left-handed characteristics reserve. Proposed by Itoh 1, Left-handed transmission line can realize definite effectric lengths within smaller physical lengths than traditional transmission lines. However, they suffer from narrow bandwidth because of parasitical RH effects. Two LH-TL structures, named dual-layered CRLH structure and improved interdigital CRLH, are proposed here to reduce RH effects. Fig. 1 shows the structure of a cell of dual-layered CRLH and its amplitude response. In Fig. 1, two metal digital patches are fabricated on individual layer to realize series capacitance CL and the vertical vias provide the shunt inductance LL. Fig. 2 shows the structure of a cell of improved interdigital CRTL and its amplitude response. In Fig. 2, by splitting interdigits into small patches, parasitical series inductance and shunt capacitance have been reduced. Fig. 1(b) and Fig. 2(b) show that the passband has been greatly extended.
