Design of High Power Phase Shifter with Left-handed Transmission Line

Based on the structure of Left-handed Transmission Line (LH-TL), a novel phase shifter with higher power capacity is designed here. In the present structure, switches of phase shifters are mounted on fingers of LH-TLs. As a result, the power capacity of present phase shifter can be greatly improved. Changing the state of fingers of LH-TLs by controlling the switches, different phase shifts can be achieved. Besides its higher power capacity, present phase shifter possesses other advantages such as low cost, small size and easy fabrication. The power capacity of traditional phase shifter is limited due to the low power capacity of these solid-state switches. We present a novel phase shifter using LH-TL 1 here and PIN diodes are also employed as switches but they are mounted on the fingers of LH-TL. Because the effectric current through a single finger is only a fraction of that through the whole LH-TL, the requirement of power capacity can be reduced. If the switch is off and on as shown in Figs. 1(a) and (b), the phase constant is β1 and β2, respectively. The difference between β1 and β2 leads to the phase shift △θ. Finally, phase shifters of 11.25°and 22.5°with the instantaneous power capacity up to 50W have been designed as examples and their performances of phase shift are shown in Figs. 2(a) and (b).
