Design of a CMOS Low-noise Amplifier with a Single Inductor Matching Network for the Ultra-wideband Systems
A single inductor matching network that carried low noise is designed to achieve the input wideband matching. Besides, the input matching network has lower complexity that reduces chip area and holds the good reffection coefficient. We also utilize the output matching buffer and inter-stage amplifier for possessing the high gain at upper frequency band. The design is simulated by TSMC 0.18um RF CMOS process. Through a 1.2 V/15mA supply, the LNA achieved the flat gain of 15 dB with gain flatness 0.6 dB; input return loss lower than ?12:65 dB; and a minimum noise figure 2.9 dB in 3:1~6:1 GHz.The schematic of the UWB LNA with the single inductor matching network is showed as Fig. 1, where the supply voltage is 1.2 V. A single inductor matching network is used to replace the traditional multi-section Chebyshev matching network 1. The proposed structure improves the NF of 1 dB than the original Chebyshev matching network by canceling two inductors. Also, the structure possesses the advantages of the reduced chip size and easy to design, etc. Besides, we adopted a cascade shunt-peaked amplifier structure to reduce the Miller effect and the inter-stage inductor, L2, which can reduce Q factor of the circuit, and improve gain fiatness. The adaptivebias circuit reduces the number of supply voltages, and an output buffer for output wideband matching. The simulation results of the UWB LNA are illustrated as Fig. 2 by Agilent ADS simulator. It indicated the characteristic of S11 < -12.65 dB, S22 <-10.5 dB, and the power gain S21 > 15 dB between 3.1 and 6.1 GHz with a gain flatness of 0.6 dB. Fig. 3 is the noise figure simulation result of the proposed LNA compared to the result using Chebyshev matching network 1. Fig. 4 is the layout photograph.
