On a Meta-Meta-Material- A bottom-up Approach for Magnetic Resonances in the Visible

We present an Artificial material with a strong resonance in the effective permeability in the visible. This effect bases on a Mie-resonance associated with the fundamental magnetic mode of a sphere made of a Meta-Material1-3. As underlying Meta-Material densely packed metallic nanoparticles are proposed. Such a Meta-Material shows a strong resonance in the permittivity around the plasmon wavelength of the coupled ensemble of metallic nanoparticles, a prerequisite for a magnetic resonance in a sphere made of such a Meta-Material. The design stages are shown in Fig. 1.The analysis is done employing rigorous di?raction and effective medium theories 4. Realizations using self-organization of metallic nanoparticles in liquid crystals and the limitations of the approach are discussed 5.
