Concrete-Polymer Composites: Where We Are and Where We Are Going
Concrete-polymer composites include polymer-impregnated concrete (PIC), polymer concrete (PC), and polymer modified concrete. A fourth area includes polymers used for crack repair. These materials have seen a steady growth but new developments have been on the decrease. There are still many products that are widely used, but the growth of these materials seems to have stabilized. A brief summary of new products related to polymer impregnation, repair, overlays, crack repair and precast polymer concrete will be presented. Polymer impregnation, which has received little attention in recent years, will not be discussed. Repair materials, particularly low modulus polymer concretes, have proven to be very effective. Polymer concrete overlays have become a widely used method of restoring bridge decks. Precast PC continues to be a popular choice for items such as railroad crossings, vaults and equipment bases. Polymers serve as the leading method for crack repair.
