Influence of Polymers on Strength and Micro Structure of Portland Cement Paste
In order to find the absorption principle between polymer and cement, compressive strength and surface tension were tested and inspection of the fresh paste and Ca(OH)2 crystal was carried out using optical microscope. The results showed that when the hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) was added into cement paste with the weight ratio of HPMC/cement under 0.1%, the compressive strength of the hardened paste and the surface tension of the water solution of the HPMC show similar change tendency. Optical microscope was used to inspect the pure Ca(OH)2 crystal and Ca(OH)2-HPMC mix crystal. The states of two crystals were obviously different in profile, transparency and accumulation. For the Ca(OH)2 crystal producing from hydration of cement is considered to be a factor which could influence the compressive strength of cement paste, the relation might be that HPMC has some reaction with water molecules and the activity of water molecules influence the Ca(OH)2 crystals production and further influence the compressive strength of cement paste. At the meantime, the polymer film forming on the surface of cement hydration product was viewed under optical microscope for the natural experiment environment. The result showed that the lucent and bright film forms on round cement knots and in worm-like canals.
