Effect of Different Latices on the Performances of their Modified Mortars

To compare the effects of different latices on performances of their modified mortars, an emulsifier-free latex (FL) and a conventional latex (CL) having the same chemical components were synthesized with styrene (St) and butyl acrylate (BA) in the presence or absence of emulsifier respectively. Properties of FL and CL modified mortars, such as water-cement ratio, air content, compressive strength and flexural strength were tested and compared. The results show that FL has a superior effect on the properties of the latex modified mortars compared with CL. Moreover, the effects of defoamer (tributyl phosphate, TBP) on the FL modified mortars were investigated. With TBP added, the air content of FL modified mortars was largely decreased and as a result, the strengths of FL modified mortars were also improved largely.
