Study on Properties of Cement Mortar Modified by Styrene-acrylic Ester Redispersible Powder

This study is conducted to evaluate physical and mechanical properties of styrene-acrylic ester (SAE) redispersible powder-modified cement mortar. The physical properties, such as water retention, air content, bulk density, and mechanical properties, such as compressive strength, flexural strength, and adhesive strength are studied. The SAE redispersible powder-modified mortar has remarkably improved water retention over unmodified mortar. A quantity of air is entrained with the range between 6.8% and 13% according to the SAE redispersible powder content. The bulk density of mortar in fresh and hardened stages both declines firstly to a minimum, and then slightly goes up with the increasing polymer content. A noticeable increase in flexural strength but no improvement in compressive strength is shown in mortar compared with unmodified one. The adhesive strength between SAE redispersible powder-modified mortar and concrete substrate has been enhanced compared to conventional mortar. By ESEM investigation, the presence of polymer films and bridges in the cement matrix is demonstrated.
