High Temperature Gas Nitriding of Stainless Steels
High temperature gas nitriding (HTGN) of the various austenitic, martensitic and ferritic stainless steels were investigated at the temperature ranges between 1050℃ and 1150℃. The investigation was focused on the surface phase changes, morphologies and types of nitrides, hardness variations and nitrogen contents from surface to interiors. Especially, the behaviors of the alloying elements at the surface layer during HTGN treatment were discussed. Tempering effect of the HTGN-treated ferritic stainless was also investigated.
